Summary

Sam Yo’s journey is anything but ordinary. Before becoming one of Peloton’s most recognizable instructors, Sam walked away from life as a West End performer to spend years living as a Buddhist monk. In this episode of Power Athlete Radio, John Welbourn sits down with Sam to explore the lessons he learned through mindfulness, discipline, meditation, and intentional living — and how those lessons shaped his approach to fitness, mental toughness, and resilience. Whether you know Sam Yo from Peloton or are searching for tools to sharpen your mindset and improve your life, this conversation delivers wisdom that goes far beyond the bike. I'm joined today by my good friend Sam Yo. Did I say that right? Yeah, did I say that right? Yeah, yeah? Yeah. Sometimes the names look very, very simple, and then there's some, like, little intricacy. But, man, I got forwarded your book, The Monk Mindset, and needless to say, I was hooked. I mean, we were kind of joking earlier that when people go to find themselves, maybe they go backpacking, and they go out and buy new shoes, you decided to pull the rip cord and go to a monastery, which I found extremely

refreshing and lightning. And I got to say, I was a little jealous. I was like, man, after dealing

So like way back in those, I was 23 and, you know, and I was someone who, at the time,

2:05.2

looked like I was really moving forward in life, but, you know, internally, you know, I was

2:10.6

completely lost and disconnected with myself. You know, in the outside, you know, I had momentum.

2:14.9

I had, I was performing in like the biggest theatre in London, the West End, you know,

2:20.1

I was earning money, getting lots of attention and, you know, doing always things that I felt meant I was becoming.
