Here's another one of those great examples of what I never expect on this podcast.

The commander of a fast attack nuclear submarine in the U.S. Navy.

That would be David Marquette, who graduated top of his class at the U.S. Naval Academy,

works his way up the chain,

gets to that point where he takes command of a sub.

Except there was a problem.

This particular submarine was not performing.

And his leadership at the outset was not performing. He took evasive action.

He realized something had to change right now. And one of the key changes that he made involved

language.

He realized he learned leadership is language.

You got the wrong language.

No one's following you.

You can't get across and bring everybody with you to where everyone feels a sense of duty, accomplishment,

whatever you want to describe it, there's going to be failure.

And David figured out those lessons, the hidden power of what we say, what we don't say. And look, I feel so lucky to get this kind of advice,

these kinds of insights from a guy who was in a high pressure, high stress situation.
