Stephan Kesting is probably best known for the huge number of Brazilian jiu-jitsu videos he has on YouTube, the martial arts training articles he’s written for Grapplearts.com, and his instructional videos which people consume in app form, online streaming form, and DVD form.
What’s not as well known is that he’s also a full-time firefighter who received the national medal of bravery for helping save two trapped firefighters from a collapse in a burning warehouse.
He’s also been an avid outdoorsman for decades. For example, in 2015 he was dying of kidney failure due to a genetic condition. A kidney transplant saved his life and 6 months later he completed a 50 km mountain endurance hike with 2,600 meters of vertical climb and descent in the snow in a single day.
He recently completed a 42 day, 1000 mile canoe trip that took him from the boreal forest of northern Canada to the open barren land tundra, and then down to Hudson bay. He was by himself and carried all his food and supplies with him. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime.
Enjoy!

| 0:53.6 | Crazy things do happen. But anyway, it was a very tense situation. |

| 1:24.8 | But you know, I was looking up something. I'm not super |
| 1:27.7 | familiar with this area. I noticed a lot of rapids. Did you have to deal with some pretty hairy |
| 1:32.3 | rapids? Because I know you're not starting at a really high elevation and you drop down what, |
| 1:36.7 | maybe 1,200 feet over the course of the 1,000 miles, but it seems like there was some big drops |
| 1:42.3 | here and there. Well, that's not exactly true because, yes, you don't start a super high elevation. |
| 1:50.8 | You start about 1,200 or 350 meters or 400 meters, something like that. |
| 1:55.7 | But remember that I was also going upstream as well as downstream. |
| 1:58.7 | So there were parts that I was climbing uphill and in fact |
| 2:02.8 | quite long sections because the entire reindeer river was uphill and the entire Cochran River was uphill. |
| 2:10.1 | And so yeah, you're dealing with big rapids there just going the wrong way. |
