Summary

I loved talking with Lisa Solomon for this week's episode of Raise Your Hand Say Yes. We talked about the myth of living a life of balance, the truth about going to (or not going to!) art school, and the power of daily devotion. We also talked about Lisa's own art projects and what she's learned about asking for help and the power of community.

Lisa is such a delight and I love how this episode turned into a giggle-fest. If you're someone who's seeeking balance but finding it elusive, this episode is for you! It's also for you if you've ever let your lack of a formal art education hold you back OR if you've let your art school scars hold you back. Want the cliff notes? Get your cheat sheet here!

Lisa, thank you so much! You're such a treat!

PS. Thank you to Mazuma for not only sponsoring the podcast but also for keeping my money house in good order! (Want to have your money house in good shape too? Mazuma has you covered!)

Hey everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Raise Your Hands Say Yes.

0:25.7

This episode has been on my mind for a long time, and I've actually mentioned it on various shows over the years.

0:37.3

This week, I'm talking with Lisa Solomon about so many different things.

0:42.4

We talk about balance. We talk about being an artist. We talk about feedback and how it's good and

0:46.8

bad and necessary and not necessary. And we talk about this idea that comes up a lot of

0:52.9

declaring yourself and then doing something every day and forming a practice.

0:57.3

And the reason I wanted to have Lisa on the show, besides just that she's fantastic and really fun to talk to and I like being around her.

1:05.1

And this episode kind of turns into a giggle fest quite a few times, which was super fun, is that she is both a working

1:13.1

artist and a professor at art school. And I've, I've, I've found that people tend to get really

1:22.2

hung up on this idea of school and art school. And if it means that you you're legit or if art school totally ruins you

1:30.5

because one professor, you know, Danielle Krissa from the jealous curator and I talked about that

1:35.7

in her episode, which I'll link to in the show notes if you guys want to check it out,

1:40.0

about her one art school professor who gave her bad feedback once and she stopped making art for years.

1:48.2

So I hear stories like that a lot. And then I also hear stories about from people who are like, well,

1:55.6

I'm not a real artist because I didn't go to art school. And so I wanted, I thought Lisa had such a great perspective

2:01.9

because obviously she sees value in art school.

2:04.6

She also, in this episode, talks a little bit about her education

2:08.7

and how she went to school and studied art and now teaches.

2:13.1

But also that she is an artist, that she makes art and shows art and does a lot of really big public installations, which we talk about too, that are really, really cool.
