Welcome to Raising Good Humans. I'm Dr. Aliza and today it's just me with you. I've been

0:12.3

getting so many listener questions, which I love, on my DMs, on At Raising Good Humans podcast.

0:20.4

And I realized it's been a little while since I've answered them. So today I have questions

0:25.5

on tantrums. And if you like this episode, don't hesitate to subscribe,

0:32.2

rate, and if you really feel excited, write a little review. So here's the first question.

0:39.4

Dr. Aliza, I'm new to your podcast, but quickly catching up with old episodes. And I was

0:44.2

wondering if you've addressed behavior modification. I know you've talked a lot about connecting,

0:50.4

and I'm wondering if there's any room in the research for straight-up rewards and punishment.

1:23.3

too religious about it in the sense that if you decide that no rewards is what you read and what

1:29.3

you heard, but something, you know, giving a little bit of positive reinforcement through a small

1:34.6

reward or attention works for you in certain circumstances go for it. The research is not

1:41.6

about whether or not it works, because in fact, a lot of methods are going to work. If by work,

1:48.8

you mean get your child to be compliant or listen well or stop what they're doing and redirect.

1:55.6

The question is for some people, if you're doing a particular kind of discipline like behavior

2:02.1

modification without some of the other support systems like connecting and being available,

2:11.2

emotionally, and kind of seeing your child and naming their feelings as well, you could end up

2:17.2

with a kid who's very compliant because they want the reward and the praise, but they may not

2:22.7

internalize how their behavior is something they can make good decisions about in the long term.
