Summary

Romantic relationships in sobriety get a pretty bad wrap, so on this episode of Recovering from Reality, I sit down with my husband (and best friend) Evan Haines as we share some lessons we've learned along our path to recovery. This week we're celebrating our 7 year wedding anniversary and it feels like the perfect time to reflect on the story of how we met. When I first met Evan (yes, we met in AA) I would listen to him talk and feel almost envious of the things he would say. He seemed so... enlightened. I looked up to him in a way and he inspired me from our very first date. On our second date he asked to meet my mom and later that night he broke up with me. Here's just one example of the wisdom Evan drops throughout the episode, "In recovery, we learn to accept ourselves, and in finding that compassion for ourselves we can find it for others." #andsoitis

So I think I really wanted to have you on, aside from the fact that you're just an incredible human being,

0:39.0

because I feel like romantic relationships in sobriety get a lot of bad, a lot of bad rap.

0:49.2

You know what I mean? It gets a bad rap, and I feel like while ours hasn't been perfect,

0:55.9

it's pretty damn good. And I would love to share with people how we've done it so far,

1:01.9

and what our relationship is like. Evan and I met when I was brand new in sobriety.

1:10.9

I think I had like probably 20 days maybe, and we met at an AA meeting, and well, I don't know,

1:20.9

why don't you tell people what I was like?

1:23.7

Well, she would kind of come in with these scarves overhead, and sunglasses, like a Hollywood movie star,

1:31.9

or something, and I guess I wondered who she was. One day I remember she came in and she shared,

1:38.5

well, oh my gosh, I just got voted the most popular mugshot, oh my gosh. And I was like,

1:45.6

first of all, who does she think she is? And second of all, I was like, who is she?

1:50.4

When I went home and Googled and kind of figured it out.

1:53.2

That's so funny. So yeah, we met, we met in AA, and I think that you kind of felt like you need

2:01.0

to steer clear. Evan had five years at the time, so Evan was five years ahead of me,

2:07.3

and we used to go to this meeting, and I would listen to you talk about recovery and life,

2:14.6

and I was always really envious of the things that you would say, and I just kept thinking to myself,

2:20.4

like, how do you get that? How do you obtain that level of spirituality and the real desire

2:30.6

and freedom from like obsessing over drinking all the time? And so I really, really looked up to you
