Summary

On Monday, 27 year old Justin Jones, after being chosen by the Nashville City Council to basically replace himself in the Tennessee State Legislature, was sworn in, and triumphantly returned to the floor of the Capitol. Today, it's time for Memphis to choose 27 year old Justin Pearson to return and be sworn in. And barring any hiccups, that's exactly what we expect to happen. Let me unpack and explain it. Earlier this week on the breakdown, we were able to have what I call a good news episode of the show.

0:07.0

When we announced that Justin Jones, one of the two young black men in Tennessee that was expelled from their legislature,

0:14.0

was sworn back into office after swift work from the Memphis City Council.

0:23.0

Today, it is our hope and our expectation that his colleague Justin Pearson, the other young black man who was expelled and who was still expelled at this point.

0:36.0

It is our hope and belief that the Shelby County Council, which is there in Memphis, Tennessee, is going to vote to have him back in office

0:48.0

and that Justin himself will be sworn back into office today.

0:53.0

Let's not only keep our fingers crossed, let's hold everybody's feet to the fire.

0:57.0

This needs to happen and I'll keep you posted. I'll try to unpack and explain everything today. This is Sean King and you are listening to...

1:19.0

Listen, I have to talk about good news every chance I get because there's always so much painful news, so much injustice in this country, so much violence, so much gun violence.

1:41.0

So when we have good news stories of victories and near victories and progress, we have to tell those stories and we hope and believe and we are fighting for today to be another good news day because it is our belief that just two days after 27-year-old Justin Jones, the young black legislator from Nashville,

2:06.0

was sworn back into office and proudly, boldly marched back into the state capital onto the floor of the state legislature with his black power fist in the air as disgusted white supremacists looked on.

2:24.0

It is our belief that his colleague Justin Pearson, who is also 27 years old, is going to be chosen by the Memphis Council, which is in Shelby County, Tennessee, which just for some context, which is where Tyree Nichols was killed.

2:46.0

Justin Pearson represents Memphis in the Tennessee state legislature. We are glad he's there. He is a just brilliant smart, sharp young man and we're so glad that he is there representing Memphis and representing his constituents.

3:04.0

But as of right now, he is a man without a seat in the legislature and that seat is unfilled by the Tennessee state legislature after they booted him out.

3:17.0

And we believe as the Nashville City Council just two days ago, very quickly voted to return Justin Jones back to the state legislature.

3:30.0

We believe that the Shelby County Council there in Memphis is going to do this today for Justin Pearson.

3:38.0

While I could say I wish they had done it two days ago, government is never known for being fast. Unless it's about war. And then at that point, the government can move very quickly.

3:54.0

You know, the government can move quickly when it wants to. This is not one of those moments when it involves their own like deep intrinsic motivations, all the government can move at lightning speed.

4:14.0

But in government speak, if Justin Pearson is chosen by the Shelby County Council today and sworn in today in Nashville, in government speak, that is lightning speed.

4:32.0

And so right now, we just want to make sure that the Shelby County Council does right by this young man we believe they will.

4:40.0

Everything that I see in here indicates that they are exceedingly proud of him and they should be and the city of Memphis should be.

4:53.0

You know, I said it yesterday and I'll continue to say it.
