Part 1 and 2. The reason that we are putting these two monologues together is because I really believe

that they're kind of telling one whole story about that moment nearly 50 years ago when the

church committee and the, I should say,

Otis Pike Committee, because we get into that in part two, exposed many of the darkest

secrets of the American deep state and, in my view, spurred a new era of reform, allowing

the FBI, the CIA, and other institutions like the NSA to survive.

So we will be back this week or next with more great re-education programming.

What is the American deep state?

So when I use the phrase, I'm referring to a national security bureaucracy

that between 1941 and 1975 operated in near total secrecy with no real oversight or

accountability from our elected government. This show endeavors to explain how and why that

changed in the year after President Nixon resigned from office in disgrace.
