Before I begin, though, I want to say a few words on behalf of rabbit holes. I fell down a few in writing this script you're about to hear.

Comes with a territory for journalists.

Sometimes a lead or a tip doesn't pan out, and a good editor tells you to just dust yourself off

and begin the hunt anew.

So this is the product of a lot of thinking, reading, rethinking, and more reading.

And on a topic like the American Deep State, I can tell you that the more you know, the less

you really know for sure.

So I am well aware that I promised part two more than two months ago, and I did not deliver.

And I can assure you that a version of that episode is in this monologue.

But over time, I realized I had too much material for just one podcast.

So keep your eye out for a future project that will go into more detail on this topic.

In the last episode, we discussed how CIA director James Schlesinger ordered the agency's personnel,

passed and present, to put in writing the times when they violated the CIA's charter.

Those reports were compiled in nearly 700-page compendium known as the family Jules. When Seymour Hirsch, then working for the New York Times, published a story based on part of that report, all hell broke loose.

A young Dick Cheney then decided that the president, in this case,

President Ford, had to appoint a panel to study the abuses of the intelligence community to stave

off Congress, get ahead of the story, but only to find out that his blue ribbon commission,

his limited hangout, was ruined by a Kinsley gaff.

That is when a politician accidentally tells the truth.

And President Gerald Ford, in a lunch with New York Times editors, accidentally told the truth
