Tonight I'd like to begin talking about the first discourse the Buddha gave after his

Enlightenment and it's often called setting the wheel of the darma in motion, or turning the wheel of the

darma.

And to discuss these teachings in the immediacy of our own lives and our own times.

So about a year or so ago, I began watching a series of documentaries on PBS, all about

World War II.

And in the watching of what was often a lot of actual film footage,

you know, of the massive destruction and chaos and confusion of those times. It was really years when the whole world was a flame. It was quite amazing just to be watching this. I couldn't

help but think that our whole species had gone mad.

It's 15 million people got killed in those six years,

not just enough natural death,

people killing each other.

And so watching just as a species, what are we doing? You know, what is going on here?

And at a certain point, you know, in these many hours of watching history unfold,

my mind began to see it from a different perspective.

And I think it was ultimately a more illuminating perspective.
