Summary

There's quotes around capsule on this podcast's title because Tsh and Erin have a more... laissez faire approach to this idea. They dish about what it means to love everything in your closet—for normal people. Erin's a professional stylist, so there's no one better to toss in two cents to this fountain. Creating a capsule wardrobe doesn't mean a uniform of black turtlenecks and jeans a la Steve Jobs—it means loving to wear all that you've got to wear. Plus, Tsh shares the 8 reasons listeners have said it's hard to declutter wardrobes. For show notes, head to thesimpleshow.com and look for episode 74.

I am a mom and stylist living in the Midwest, and I write about my life over at Design for Mankind.com. And I'm a writer and mom living in central Texas, and you can find me online at the art of simple.net. This is a home episode. So in this one, we're going to talk about capsule wardrobes, the 101 on how to get started on them.

And we're also going to talk about how capsule wardrobes don't always have to look the same. Hello, Steve Jobs. Okay. Now, Erin, I don't know why, but I kind of think of you and I think of capsule wardrobes, even though I know tons of people have written about them online. So can you tell me a little bit about what your take is on them and sort of like whether you're a purist or not? Yes. Oh my gosh. Yes. So I did actually

used to be a purist at one point of time. And do you remember 30 by 30 the wardrobe challenge?

1:08.4

Okay. So that's kind of where it all began for me. And I actually just took

1:11.7

the assignment for a magazine I was writing for ready made. I don't know if anybody remembers that.

1:16.3

I loved that one. And yes, took on the challenge for them and totally quit on day 19. Couldn't do it.

I missed my rainbow skirts. And at the time, I had a very loud sense of fashion. And I missed my grandma skirts, and at the time I had a very loud sense of fashion.

1:29.3

And I missed my grandma's boots.

1:31.3

And there were just all of these practical things that I put in my capsule wardrobe for obvious reasons.

1:36.7

But then when I would feel like not being practical that day, I had nothing to wear.

1:40.8

So I moved from that purist, if you can't make it 19 days, you can't do it at all. And then I

1:48.5

tried it again, and I was much more flexible with myself. And again, I had issues because I left,

1:57.8

you know, when you're when you're creating a capsule wardrobe, you're taking just the

2:01.8

bare necessities and you're trying not to repeat the same kind of item. So I had, you know, my one white

2:08.2

t-shirt that I left. It was my favorite white t-shirt ever. And of course, the inevitable,
