All over this country there are stories, inspiring stories of people who fought through heart

aches and adversity to make something of their lives and to help make other people's lives

better.

No one exemplifies that more than my friend, DeVal Patrick, who grew up on the south side

of Chicago in difficult circumstances and went on to become the first African American

governor of Massachusetts and one of the most impactful governors of that state, caught

up with him at the Democratic National Convention last week and had a great conversation.

DeVal Patrick, everybody knows you as the former governor of Massachusetts, but I know

you're not just as a client and friend, but as a really a Chicagoan, that's what we claim

you.

Good.

But you came a long way from where you started to where you are.

Talk about where you started.

So David, as you know, I grew up on the south side of 54th and Wauwbash, was born in my

grandparents' two bedroom tenement and lived all my years or most of my years until the

age of 14 there with them and my mother and sister and various relatives who came and went.

You heard me tell a story about sharing one of those bedrooms in a set of...

Yeah, tell that story.

Yeah, my mother and sister and I shared one of the bedrooms in a set of bunk beds and

we rotate from the top bunk to the bottom bunk to the floor every third night on the floor.
