Summary

National Park Exploration: A year-long journey to visit all 418 national park sites across America, navigating government shutdowns and travel chaos along the way.

Amid a massive government shutdown, travel companies going out of business, and a myriad of unforeseen circumstances, Andy Magee successfully visited all 418 national park sites starting January 1, 2019 and finishing December 31, 2019.

Traveling thousands of miles around the country, Andy got a cross-section example of who and what America is in a sense that few can relate to.

His stories are amazing and his reflections will inspire you to get out there and visit the nearest National Park site near you.

Be sure to take a look at his incredible photos from the journey.

The trip took me to all 50 states. It took me from the Caribbean to the other side of the international date line. It took me from north of this episode and think, oh, cool.

big national parks in a year, like the Grand Canyon, you know, Great Smoky Mountains,

0:43.8

Yosemite, Yellowstone, you know, all those kinds of places in a whole year. You know,

0:50.4

that's pretty neat. But yeah, he did do that, but he also did a heck of a lot more than that

0:56.7

because he didn't only travel to the big national parks is what they're called.

He traveled to every location that is operated and maintained by the National Park Service.

1:09.9

This includes everything from national memorial sites,

1:15.1

national historical sites, recreation areas,

1:17.8

I mean, the list goes on, national seashores,

1:24.2

rivers, scenic trails,

1:26.6

let's see, scenic rivers and riverways. And there's a,

1:29.9

there's like a miscellaneous category and everything from battlefields and just, just incredible

1:37.8

stuff, military bases that are, you know, historical markers now. So it really is a vast array of locations. And when you add them all

1:46.9

together, the National Park Service, which definitely is in charge of the National Parks, which is

1:52.1

probably their most famous part of their inventory, I guess you could say, there ends up being

2:00.4

over 400 of these places. When Andy did this trip back in say, there ends up being over 400 of these places.

2:01.6

When Andy did this trip back in 2019, there were 418 individual locations that he visited

2:09.6

in a matter of a year. Now there are 422 and still, you know, I don't know if he's going to

2:16.6

have to add those to his list, but he did

2:18.5

them all at the time in a calendar year, which is a hard task because it's all more than one a day.
