Summary

Backcountry Skiing: Discover how one passionate skier turned a lifetime of exploring New Hampshire's White Mountains into a thriving community outfitter and backcountry skiing hub.

The mountains of New Hampshire have brought many exciting experiences to Andrew Drummond. Growing up in the area Andrew has been training his whole life, without knowing it, to be a defining source of knowledge, gear, and stoke for backcountry skiing in the Northeast. After stints skiing and surfing out west, even going up to Alaska to alpine tour, Andrew was ready to come home and spread the stoke in his own backyard.

After refamiliarizing himself with the White Mountains that he still calls home, the constant questioning from like-minded folks wanting to know the best places to go just off the beaten path, as well as folks wanting to dip their toes in this new backcountry craze, led Andrew down a path he never thought he’d lead...retail.

Having opened his shop, Ski the Whites, to help satiate the area’s needs, the growth of community and adventure has only risen as well. Now outfitting folks for skiing, biking, and runnings, the shop has even begun dabbling in coffee to further meet folks where they are with what they with the focus always being on a solid community.

On top of owning and operating an outfitting company, Andrew serves on the board of the Granite Backcountry Alliance and he joins today to tell us about his journey and impact on and off the mountain.

Enjoy.

0:15.7

But at least you're not going to be second guessing yourself all the time.

0:36.3

Yeah. Please you're not going to be second guessing yourself all the time. What I love about this story and what I love about these kinds of stories are when folks take what they've learned out on adventures in other parts of the world, other parts of the country, and bring it back home to share in their own backyard and to help cultivate community.

0:54.9

And Andrew is doing that with backcountry skiing in New Hampshire, near where he grew up.

1:02.0

He spent time out west, spent time in Alaska, doing, you know, these just epic routes,

1:06.8

unbelievable mountains, and eventually came back home to grow this amazing community that's called

1:12.2

Ski the Whites. And I really encourage you to check them out, especially if you're in that area,

1:16.9

because it's such a cool community. It's all about getting folks outdoors, getting folks in

1:22.9

the backcountry of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. But they also do a running store, bike store,

1:29.5

and Andrew is into a lot of different sports, but he's definitely like a pillar of this community

1:34.5

and started it from scratch. But the reason we're having him on today, this is actually an interview

1:39.9

from my other show without compromise through my day job at athletic brewing. At don't know if you know this or not but two percent of all our sales

1:49.6

of our beer our non-alcoholic craft beer gets put in a fund and then we donate it to different

1:56.6

causes that are helping folks get outdoors um through either trail maintenance or trail work.

2:02.7

Mostly it's stuff around repairing trails and really just trail work.

2:07.3

But this winter with the influx of backcountry skiers, we wanted to donate a big portion

2:14.0

of that money to backcountry education, backcountry awareness, and safety.

2:20.0

So one of the organizations that we're donating money to is Granite Backcountry Alliance,

2:25.4

which Andrew is a board member of, and that is based up in the Northeast as well.
