a big mistake I see a lot of people make, not even just husband and wife, but friends. They're like,

0:04.3

oh, we're both coaches. We're both passionate about fitness. We should start a business together. And I'm like, why would two coaches start a business together? Why wouldn't you guys just each have your own business? It doesn't, you're just overlapping work. It doesn't make any sense. What's up, babe? Welcome back to the fitness business podcast. Today we're going to talk about why you should never start a business with your spouse, which is kind of funny. So we just

0:02.8

wanted to let you guys all know we're getting a divorce. Sorry to break it to you. The business ruined it. I'm taking everything. You're right. I would get so fucked over. Everything's in your name. We hooked you. But no, we really want to share with you guys what we've learned as a couple working together over the last six years, the good, the bad, the ugly. There are pros, there are cons to it. Because the truth is, 50% of businesses fail. Over a five year span of time, 50% fail. 50% of marriages fail. So we were asked all the time by students, different people, should I bring my husband in? Should I bring my wife in? And 90% of the time, I'm like, no. But I want to share with you guys, like why we've gone against our own advice to build these companies, where it's been worth it, where we've really struggled and where we've had to work on things and just some things we've learned along the way. And then also, if you maybe you're pondering that question, should I bring my husband in, should I bring my wife in, we can help you decide whether it's a good choice or a convenient proximity hire type choice. And how to do it right. The tactics, the systems that we've used. And I think it's a great idea for most, like for most people, because I'm like, hey, it depends. It does. Because a cool stat is also 50% of marriages fail, but if you run a business with your spouse,

1:32.0

only 10% of marriages fail. But 90% of businesses that are started by married couples fail.

1:39.1

I still don't believe that stat, but maybe. Well, if you think about 76% of businesses fail.

2:04.9

Yeah, and 50% of marriages, so you combine the two. Yeah. Most businesses, like, whatever. But I think the cool thing is that if you do bring your spouse in, it's going to bring to the light some issues that you're probably not recognizing. Yes. And so, yeah, that might lead to a divorce, but like, yeah, that's probably it was probably, yeah, probably needed to happen either way. Yeah. So we were thinking where we could dive in is just first off sharing some of our fights lessons, like big mistakes that we've made. Yeah, let's talk about some

2:12.1

fights. So the first one, should we start with the Tuesday nap story? Yeah, because that's when we first started in entrepreneurship together.

2:20.3

So I think it's really good because, well, let me start here, actually.

2:23.8

When Jordan and I met, I had two rules.

2:26.9

One, I was never getting married again.

2:28.5

And two, I sure as fuck wasn't going to get into another business partnership with a significant other again. I was in the middle

2:35.2

of a ugly divorce battle where we owned a business together and we still hadn't completely

2:40.7

separated that yet. So I like meet my new boyfriend and then the first thing I do is start a

2:44.6

business with them. So so there were some ground rules laid in like some ways that this really had to go for me. But the way that this story transpired initially, we hadn't even started our businesses together yet. So when I met Aaron, she was an online coach crushing it, doing a half million dollars a year by herself. I'd had some business experience and other ventures. And I was just mind blown by that. I thought it was super cool. And I was obsessed with fitness. It was my thing. And I always wanted to find a way to make a career out of it. So eventually

3:10.9

just watching Aaron do it, I'm like, I think I could do this too. So at that time, I was working in a job. I didn't really like making good money, had a lot of freedom. But I decided to quit that job and just go all in. And so I went from making like seven to 11K a month in commission

3:08.9

based sales to like zero. And Aaron was like, look, I'll cover us for a few months here like while you get your business off the ground. And I'm like, oh, great, this is awesome. You know, so I'm living with her, not paying any bills really. I think I was like paying you some rent out of my Bitcoin that I had saved if I remember. You were paying me $1,000 a month. Yeah, which I was selling Bitcoin to be able to pay that.

3:43.0

But anyways.

3:43.2

You never told me that until literally right now. Yeah. Whoops. So anyways, I'm like one day, it's Tuesday afternoon. I'm asleep. I like noon taking a nap. I used to love naps. and Aaron's business at that time was also kind of on a decline because she was so distracted by her divorce.

3:42.3

The landscape of online coaching also kind of on a decline because she was

3:58.2

so distracted by her divorce. The landscape of online coaching was kind of changing, more competitors

4:02.3

coming in, social media algorithms had shifted. And like her revenue was declining. And here I am

4:08.1

making no money taking a nap on a Tuesday. This fucking bitch comes and wakes me up. And she's like,
