Today we'll be telling the story of St. Baldred of Tiningham, whose feast is celebrated on March 6th.

Not much is known about his early life, but scholars guess that he was probably born in Ireland in the early 8th century.

As an adult, St. Baldra joined the North Umbrian missions. North Umbria was the name given to the area that is now Northern England and Southeast Scotland.

He founded a monastery at Teningham and was the Abbot there.

But he also enjoyed solitude, so he built himself a small hermitage and chapel on Bass Rock, a rocky island about a mile offshore.

Other times he would just stay for a while in a cave on the beach, and it's now known as St. Baldritt's Cave.

Now it's time for our story. The waves crashed around Bass Rock.

Salt Sprays splashed up against the tiny stone island.

St Baldrids stood outside his little hermitage and breathed in the salty air.

This was his special place, the place he could go to be alone with God.

It was difficult to get to.

He had to paddle a small boat from the shore one mile through all sorts of weather to get to it.

But it had been what he felt called to do, so he didn't mind it at all.
