Summary

Today we're talking with Texas state Representative Jeff Leach about the potential fate and innocence of Melissa Lucio, who is on death row after being convicted of killing her young daughter in 2007. Since then, a movement has sprung up around her, attracting criminal justice reform advocates from both Left and Right to rally to her cause. Many of these supporters claim that Lucio not only is innocent, but she was a wonderful mom and person who is just a victim of the system. Rep. Leach at the very least believes there should be a retrial for Lucio, as he says important evidence was left out of the original trial. We debate the differing sources of information and evidence and whether or not it should result in another trial. While neither of us would ever want an innocent person to be executed, there are serious questions about whether Lucio truly is innocent here, and we hash out our difference of opinion with Rep.
