Hi, this is Raghu Marcus and welcome back to Ramdas here and now podcast. In this podcast includes a talk Ramdas gave at Hunter College in 1970. It's a piece of the talk. And this talk is around a desire. This is like one of what you would call basic spirituality 101.

1:39.0

It applies from the early moments that you get on to the path all the way to when you think you've gone beyond some of this stuff.

1:52.0

And I have a little example myself here. There's a great quote that Ramdas gives actually from the time. So this is 1970. So this is just before, or you know, around seven months or so, six months before he went back to India the second time.

2:16.0

And during the time that he was in India, the first time and he stayed at Nimkuroli Baba Maharajis ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas in Kenshi. He had a teacher, Haridas Baba, who taught him yoga and all of the basic yoga principles beyond Hatha Yoga, ashtanga yoga.

2:44.0

So this is Ramdas talks about how he always kind of quotes this particular thing that his teacher, Haridas, used to tell him all the time.

Desire is a trap. Desirelessness is liberation. Desire is the creator. Desire is the destroyer. Desire is the universe.

3:11.0

And that does say it all for most of us, most of the time. And we talked about, he talks about with eyes unclouded by desire. We see how it all is in reality.

3:30.0

But even the desire to see how it all is is another desire that clouds reality. That's something that contemplates.

3:41.0

So there is fortunately, some anecdotes to desire, the ways to develop a center from which we can really take a look at how we act day to day moment to moment.

4:06.0

And there is an interesting, actually, he talks about some different methods. And there was one he talked about, which I haven't remembered or gone to this in such a long time.

4:19.0

There is a teacher named Gurgif, that I am sure many of you know. And he had a practice called self-remembering, which is very similar to developing the witness,

4:34.0

which Ramdas has talked a lot about over the years and from that time to this time. And that witness allows you to slowly extricate yourself from those desires that cloud your eyes.

4:52.0

And extricate ourselves from our melodrama, which is very much key to being able to navigate life and have some kind of balance.

5:06.0

So we could check that out. In fact, I am going to talk to my partner in mind rolling, which if those of you haven't listened to that podcast, go to mindrollingpodcast.com and listen to David Silver and I ramble on about all sorts of different things.

5:25.0

And that's probably a proper forum for talking about Gurgif. And because I know that David's father was a student of Gurgif.

5:39.0

So desire has to fall away, you know, just like the skin from a snake. You can't rip it off. There's nothing. We can't sit here and just block it. It's not going to happen.

5:51.0

You know, everything has to happen in its own time. We have a certain, we have certain proclivity, some scars they're called. And we can just watch them.
