Today we'll be telling the story of St. Blaze, whose feast is celebrated on February 3rd. He was born in what

is modern-day Seivas Turkey, sometime during the 3rd century, and an exact year isn't known.

Not much is known about St. Blaze's early life, but he was a physician before becoming the Bishop of Sebastian and died as a martyr.

St. Blaise was known as a healer, not just of people, but of animals. In fact at one point he lived as a

hermit in a cave and was taking care of by wild animals. People said they saw him

kneeling in prayer with wild beasts and spoke to them as if they were people.

St. Blaze is most famous for the story of the little boy that had a fishbone stuck in his throat.

His mother brought him to St. Blaze who prayed over the boy's throat and the boy was miraculously healed.

To this day people go to church on the Feast of St. Blaze for the blessing of their throats,

which is done with candles. But the candles actually come from another famous story about St. Blaze.

St. Blaze is the patron saint of wild animals, choking, veterinarians, throats,

babies, carvers, and will workers.
