Summary
Training to be the best in your sport is one thing, coaching is a whole other animal. Hear how former powerlifter Travis Mash learned to invoke a healthy shittalking environment, his thoughts on the International Olympic Committee, and his struggles adapting to coaching female lifters. And a healthy dose of movie discussion to remind you that Tom Cruise has never made a bad movie and that Mel Gibson played one hell of a tactical Santa.
Travis Mash takes good weightlifters and makes them exceptional. But he doesn’t mince words about how few actually make it to big events like the Olympics. He’s driven by performance and quite frankly, gets all the social interaction he can handle by coaching. It’s obvious he’s dedicated to his athletes because he knows almost nothing about movies that have come out in the last 5 years. But we won’t hold that against him.

| 0:00.0 | You know, the velocity-based training is interesting. |
| 0:05.7 | You know, we toyed with it, and I've always, you know, thought it was so interesting in terms of, like, you know, like periodization and trying to, like, figure out, like, you know, fatigue. |
| 0:15.9 | And then I just figured out that sometimes sheer will can just get you to move the fucking bar as fast as you can. |
| 0:37.6 | It can. Yeah, totally. And then there were, and then when we were, you know, we had a Tendo unit, we had all these athletes coming in and we were doing this. And there was all these outliers that like, just completely, like, we had all this. I thought I was super jiggy. And then we brought in people that were outliers and just kind of shattered everything. So I sometimes wonder, I know the stuff you're doing, you work with a lot of what I would consider outliers. |
| 0:43.0 | Or like, I love seeing your Instagram when popping up and seeing like 17 year old kids snatching 400 pounds, you know, and just like shit where I'm like, oh my God. |
| 0:53.8 | So we have a bunch of outliers. |
| 0:55.9 | Are they outliers or is it just intelligent programming and good coaching? |
| 1:01.7 | That's a great question. |
| 1:02.9 | You know, like, you know, the best athlete I have, you know, is in my backyard. |
| 1:08.2 | So it's not somebody I recruited. |
| 1:09.9 | It just happened to be somebody who came to me. |
| 1:12.0 | He wanted, he wanted to be good at CrossFit. And the minute I saw him move, I'm like, okay, I'll get whatever you want me to tell you, you know, but I knew he's going to be a great way to look for him, and he was in my backyard. So is he not liar? I mean, I'm definitely having some good genetics, but he didn't start out quite as quickly |
| 1:30.9 | as some people, but he's definitely now risen to the, you know, risen to that level |
| 1:36.4 | much quicker than some others. |
| 1:38.4 | Is it, I mean, is it genetics or with Olympic weightlifting? |
| 1:41.8 | Is it just, you know, shushank redemption, time and pressure? |
| 1:45.9 | Well, you know, power lifting, I would definitely say time and pressure. With waylifting, |
| 1:51.3 | you got to have, you know, if you look at someone, I'll tell you, here's a, here's a good indicator. |
| 1:57.1 | We do a, you know, reactive strength index. We do a depth jump and we look at how high and then how quickly they got off the ground. |
| 2:04.4 | And it is almost point blank. |
| 2:07.2 | Like you can look in a straight line of like who's my best to who's my worst based on that test. |
| 2:13.1 | And so there I have to say like genetics has to play a role because, you know, RSI is going at like the ten ends and it's going to look at you know fiber type and it's going to look at strength it's pretty much all three of what's important all in one and it's a tell tell sign and the guy that's you know my best dude that should make the Olympics the squad like he's going to be the top guy in that test so he's got the |
