0:28.3	Today we'll be telling the story of St. John the Merciful, whose feast is celebrated on January 23rd.
0:34.7	He has also known as St John the Almoner, a term used to reference his generosity to the poor.
0:40.5	John was born on the island now known as Cyprus around the year 552. Not much
0:47.1	is known about his early life. He was born to a noble family, grew up, got married,
0:51.8	and had his own family. But sadly his wife and
0:54.9	children died, and it was at that point that he entered religious life. The people
1:00.0	of Alexandria noticed St. John's Holiness and his incredible devotion to caring for the poor,
1:04.7	and asked the Emperor Focus to appoint John to the position of Patriarch of Alexandria, which is like the Archbishop.
1:10.3	As the Patriarch, St John made a special point of caring for the poor and needy.
1:16.3	He took measures to end the practice of Simony and thought education was the key to fighting
1:20.3	heresy.
1:22.1	During his lifetime, he increased the number of churches in
