Summary

Latest public talk (a punchy one with a lot crammed into the 15 minute slot), this time in the lovely country of Clonakilty, West Cork in the South of Ireland.  Excellent leadership from Enda Buckley and the Carbery Group management team to launch this initiative to support farmers in achieving better health and productivity, and great job by Orla Hurley in managing all of the logistics. The event featured 4 more speakers on health, safety and productivity educational topics. Nearly 200 farmers and their family members attended to make it a full room on the night in the beautiful Fernhill House Hotel.

As mentioned this talk was a tight one, and compresses the core messages on heart attack risk identification - and of course prevention - into 15 short minutes. This may be an ideal one to share with busy friends, family and medical practitioners who often don't have time for the long ones!

Great conversations after the event included one with a 53 year old Cork man who had found my content and IHDA only a short while ago, and was delighted to be able to come and talk about his recent high score - and what he was doing about it. An all too familiar case, he had been told for years that he had no worries on the heart attack front, as he clearly had "low cholesterol" - fantastic, eh?  But in reality he was a classic TOFI case - slim, with low LDL...but you only find the disease when you actually look inside. And now he's all over it - great stuff.

So in closing, is real food from the Irish farmers part of this health story? For sure it is - farmers are essentially "in the human health business" - perhaps more than they fully realize at times.

As always, go to IHDA.ie for the latest information on heart attack risk detection, and subscribe to https://thefatemperor.com/subscribe to get the solutions!

A big thanks to Enden Carberry Group. I think this is a fantastic initiative and we should be seeing a lot more of this all across Ireland.

And what was just said there, farmers are in the human health business and I couldn't agree more because human health comes primarily from nutrition and nutrient dense foods.

Yeah, there's some genetics, but it's mostly from what you put in your mouth.

So I'll go through some heart disease realities here now.

So I work on behalf of David Bobbitt, who's an Irish entrepreneur, who set up the Irish

for the past several years. I just want to start with looking at health span. Now, lifespan is one thing, but you really don't want to spend a long time at the end of your life in poor health.

0:59.0

So health span is how long you can live while still being vital, engaged with life, productive, enjoying life.

1:07.0

So basically, the best choice people often get up into the 80s with good health and I'm sure you know many

1:13.6

However, if you make very poor choices in nutrition and health or if you're unlucky in some other manner

1:20.5

Your health span can only go up to the 50s and 60s and I'd say a lot of you know people like that as well who have chronic disease in around 60

1:28.8

and it impacts their life. Now the reality is that you guys bust your ass working your whole life

1:35.2

so you can have the money, resources and security to enjoy this period after you back off from work.

And there's a huge amount of value out here. There's sports, socializing,

watching the grandchildren grow up or being part of their development, huge amount of very delightful life out here.

1:55.0

But that's at play, that 20 years is something you play for with your choices.

2:00.0

So basically this is the biggest killer that takes away that period at the end of life. It's coronary disease, atherosclerosis, vascular disease, heart attacks. And interestingly, heart attacks kill five times more women than breast cancer adults. So it's not just the men, but we often associate

2:18.3

it as a male problem primarily. So it's a huge issue and that's what I'm going to talk about.
