Summary

In this week's episode of Monocycle, Malcolm Gladwell tackles the notion of consumption in 2016 -- how we eat, how we engage with our Internet tendencies and whether or not, in spite of statistics that suggest millennials are acquiring less, we are addicted to material gain. I'm just kidding, Malcolm Gladwell is not in the building. It's just me, Leandra, talking into her tiny booth about consumption. I do break up the topic into the three aforementioned categories: food, shopping and Internet but probably also go on to diminish any credibility tagged to my points given the sweeping statements that are subsequently posited about our generation, and how we're different (for better or worse) because. Of. How. Much. We. Consume. All. The. Time. For a while, it sounds kind of cynical, but then I reel it back in with a dose of diet cherry coke and optimism because frankly, if you only learn one thing from Man Repeller/Monocycle/me, I hope that it is this: cynicism is much easier than optimism, so do the right thing, which is always the hard thing and force yourself to see the world through rose-colored glasses. A luxury consignment site where you could basically find the Celine trench coat you've been looking for since 2008 at like 70% off the sale price. That is not a statistic. It is a genuine

number. It has happened. One time I bought a black, double-breasted tuxedo blazer by

Celine for $250. It was arguably the best thing that has ever happened to me short of my wedding day.

It is the first week of November, and as such, this episode makes the most sense to dedicate to our theme of the month.

1:05.8

I don't know if you're aware of this, but every month on Manrepeller, we have a dedicated theme,

1:10.0

and the content of the month

1:11.5

falls in line with whatever that theme was. This month in November, we're talking about

1:16.5

consumption. I don't know if you know how I record these episodes, but essentially what I do

1:26.1

is record a voice note on my iPhone

1:29.1

into this tiny little sound booth that is full of little styrofoam triangles that are like

1:35.2

glued to the box. It's so small, it just about fits my head and I dunk it in and I talk into

1:43.1

the iPhone. But I noticed today as I was

1:46.2

gearing up to start recording that every time I accessed my phone, instead of going to the

1:51.0

voice notes, I would first go to Instagram, scroll like two or three times, realize that's

1:56.3

not what I intended to do when I got my phone, and then X out, check my email, write a note, and then

2:03.1

open my phone again. This happened like three times, which delayed the process of my beginning

2:08.5

to record. And it wasn't deliberate, which scares the hell out of me. And the reason I think
