Summary

In the special segment "Why Is My Kid Crying?," Shanna and Laura explore the things that have brought out the waterworks in their little ones recently, including situations in the distant past that seem to have induced an anxiety attack and a jealousy-induced meltdown. Also, Laura is skeptical about her son's newest extracurricular activity, and Shanna is surprised by the incident that leaves her daughter looking "like a pirate." Finally, the moms wrap up with their BFPs and BFNs for the week, including a joyous celebration at the park and a volunteer position that actually sounds fun. Shanna’s kids are 10 and 7 years old, and Laura’s kids are 7 and 5 years old.

0:11.0

Where we explore the unusual reasons our kids are crying in the car, at the park, at bedtime, and more.

0:17.0

And we wrap it up with our weekly BFPs and BFNs. Let's get started.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to episode 401. Hi, Laura. Hi, Shauna. Hello, hello. Why don't you kick us

0:30.1

off with your check-in for the week? What's going on over there? Well, I wanted to check in

0:34.7

about a new activity that Augie is doing that I pretty much had nothing to do with.

0:40.3

Ooh, that's rare for us to not be involved. So tell me more.

0:44.8

Yeah, I mean, up to this point, I've been a bit of a control freak with my kids' activities.

0:48.8

So it is surprising to have something planned all for you and a little, you know, out of my comfy zone.

0:56.7

I have to say that I'm a little skeptical about how this is going to pan out, but I am trying to take a wait and see optimistic approach.

1:05.5

So here's the thing. Augie has not had a lot of activities historically, and up until recently he was doing doing nothing. Like, he wasn't doing parkour. He wasn't doing any music. He was doing absolutely nothing. And that changed when he decided he wanted to start parkour again, or he agreed, because I had been asking, like, do you want to start park Oregon? Like, we are members at the gym, so might as well start again. We don't have to pay another member of it ship fee, you know,

1:30.6

like, let's go. And he attended one of Sebastian's classes and was like, oh, yeah, this looks fun.

1:36.1

So he started parkour again. And then he asked to start electric guitar lessons. So he was doing

1:42.2

that once a week. But all in all, he was pretty

1:46.3

under-scheduled, or what I would call perfectly scheduled, right? Like two activities a week,

1:52.4

kind of my sweet spot. I don't like being over-scheduled. I get super stressed out when we

1:57.2

have too much to do. Like, I know a lot of families thrive on running from activity

2:01.3

to activity, but that's just not my jam, you know? And so I was perfectly fine with letting

2:09.5

this role as long as possible, except for the fact that Augie started asking to play more

2:15.9

sports. Oh, okay. And again, I kind of was just like, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, we'll see, like kicking it down the road, wondering if he would lose interest and stop asking me because I did not want to schedule anything else. And every time I started looking into different leagues at like the rec centers and all this stuff, I kind of got overwhelmed or I had missed the sign up. So I was just like, you know what? Forget it. Like, we'll deal with this later. Right. And he was kind of wishy-washy about what he wanted to do. Like he would say soccer, then he'd say he wanted to do baseball, then he would say he wants to do basketball. So it was kind of all over the place. But then in his weekly send home packet
