When I was first starting out in the world of work, I remember thinking that all I needed to do to succeed was to

work really hard to put in the extra hours to volunteer,

step up to do whatever needed to be done to build up my resume and my portfolio.

And now that I've got a few more, well, decades, I guess, of experience under my belt,

I can see hard work really is important, but there is another essential part of the equation.

And that's communication.

How do you talk to your boss or your supervisor about getting a raise or a promotion?

What do you say if a colleague isn't pulling their weight on a project?

How do you express that you're feeling burnt out?

How do you properly motivate a team member once you're a manager?

These are what we call, quote unquote, soft skills,

but they can actually be really hard to navigate because most of us, many of us,

are not taught to be good coworkers or managers.
