Summary

Ever been less-than-pleased with the body you see in the mirror? I've been there (in some ways, am still there at the moment). I would wager that, between pregnancy body changes, unrealistic cultural beauty standards (hello, air-brushing), and a tendency to be overly critical of our appearances, most of us women can relate to wishing we could tweak a thing or two about the way we look.

But is that how God views us? If we look to Scripture, we quickly discover that, rather than swinging to one extreme or the other of either self-indulgence or vain self-obsession, we are to "offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God." (Romans 12:1)

In other words, it's way less about how we look (a lesson I am constantly learning/relearning as my body ages) and way more about how we love God and love others with the resources (including the body) He's given us.

I am still a work in progress in every area, including this one, but, as always, I'm so grateful the Lord is so gracious not to leave us where He finds us.

And on today's show, I'm taking a little bit of a pivot

0:17.2

from the thing that I thought I was going to talk about

0:20.1

and instead addressing kind of a hot button issue, hopefully and primarily and exclusively from a biblical perspective,

0:29.0

because it's what the Lord laid on my heart to talk about today.

0:32.0

And it's been on my brain for a couple of days because I had an absolute meltdown over this issue about three days ago.

0:42.0

So what's the issue? Well it's body image and I say it's a hot button issue because this

0:49.7

is something that has become sort of a battle cry for women, this concept of body

0:56.5

positivity, of accepting yourself, of rebelling against cultural norms for beauty or on the flip side we see reality shows like the

1:08.0

Kardashians and others I'm sure real housewives and things like that where they're

1:14.0

they're perpetuating completely unrealistic

1:17.7

stereotypes of beauty standards so you have

1:21.7

liposuction and injections and Botox and out of post, you know, enhancements in your rear end, Brazilian butt lifts, I think that's what they're called.

1:35.4

You have this idea that your face is never supposed to sag, never supposed to age, that your

1:40.1

hips are never supposed to widen even if you have children, that your breasts are supposed

1:44.3

to say perky and never have stretch marks, you know, that you're just never supposed to show your

1:49.6

age and that's the ultimate goal.

1:52.3

So I often find that while biblical Christianity is seen as extreme by many in our culture,

2:01.0

when you actually look at the reasonableness of it, at the truth of it, it's

2:07.7

nestled in this very middle ground, not lukewarm, but balanced area.

2:16.4

And again, it's undergirded by God's truth.
