Summary

Zach and Laura reflect on significant milestones and life lessons. Laura shares her journey of completing the New York Marathon, weaving in lessons about endurance, self-discovery, and how the physical demands of a marathon parallel the emotional effort required in relationships. Zach celebrates four years of sobriety, reflecting on how his journey has reshaped his relationships, health, and mindset.

The episode dives into themes of personal growth, resilience, and navigating difficult phases in life. Zach recites a favorite poem about marathons, illustrating how breaking down challenges into smaller, manageable parts can lead to long-term success. Laura reflects on her recent decision to quit alcohol, sharing the impact it has had on her physical and mental health, as well as her desire to model positive habits for her family. Together, they explore how embracing hard things—like running a marathon or choosing sobriety—can create space for joy, clarity, and meaningful connections.

The conversation also touches on the value of support systems, including friendships and therapy, and how intentional choices can lead to lasting positive change.

I think there are lessons inside of a marathon that couples can use. I also get to recite one of my favorite poems of all time.

We talk a little bit about a major milestone for me and what that means. And I don't know,

    0:28.0

just a bunch of stuff. It's a good episode and I hope you'll enjoy it. This is a very cool

conversation. Stick around. I'm proud. Why?

    0:47.3

Because I made a decision to be healthier and I don't know if, I don't know, like, it just, like,

    0:51.2

something shifted in me where I thought it was going to be like a constant battle where I was going to have to keep like negotiating with myself with every outing that I went to, every dinner that I went to. I have a party coming up on Saturday.

    0:59.8

And I thought it was going to be really hard. And I'm so proud of myself. I feel like I just,

    1:04.3

I got over the hump. Nobody knows what you're talking about. I'm talking about alcohol.

    1:08.8

Yeah. And it's funny because I've been reading a couple of books that were recommended,

    1:14.5

and I've been listening to podcasts.

    1:16.0

The Huberman podcast has a really great podcast that talks about, like,

    1:19.7

the harmful impacts of alcohol on the body.

    1:23.1

And I'm also reading Quit Like a Girl.

    1:26.5

And the juxtaposition of the two, I'm very burpy right now.

    1:34.2

It's just interesting to me because I can say, like, with full certainty that the book does not, it doesn't speak to me.

    1:42.1

Like my motivation or my why, how to quit like a girl.

    1:46.7

Or, yeah, because it talks a lot about like really, I would say like, I don't know how to

    1:54.0

describe it, just harmful drinking, harmful. And I do think that drinking at all is harmful.

    2:00.2
