→ Timestamps: (00:00) In July 1833, Missourians mob the Saints. The Lord defines when fighting back is justified.(03:07) The Book of Mormon teaches that we should be reluctant to go into conflict.(06:25) Conflict should have righteous motivation: to preserve, defend, and protect.(10:10) We can’t be guilty of striking back. We won’t have the Lord’s help in conflict if we retaliate.(19:46) Conflict is justified in times of exigency, an urgent need or demand.(21:49) The Saints made mistakes which inflamed the conflict in Missouri.(26:42) We must accept the responsibilities that come with rights.(41:24) Section 99 is a revelation to John Murdock.(44:20) In Section 100 Joseph is on his mission to Canada, where key converts are later found.(45:46) Section 101 emphasizes the need for a watchman on a tower. Prophets and temples will prepare us for what is to come.(55:12) The violence and suffering continues in 1833. The prophet Joseph details what Zion must do to be safe, including building a temple.(1:01:14) The end of Section 101 can be read as much more than a call to gather Zions Camp and march to Missouri. It can also be read as the Lord’s call to perfect the Saints.(1:06:00) The future of Zion is bright. Be still and know that I am God.(1:11:04) Beautiful promises of the Second Coming of Christ and future Millennial peace.

Welcome to Talking Scripture. I'm Mike.

0:25.0

And I'm Bryce.

0:25.8

And today we are going to be in sections 98 through 101.

0:29.4

Much of the material in these sections deals with the aftermath of the July mobbing in Missouri, especially 98 and 101.

0:38.9

98 comes on August 6, 1833.

0:43.3

And from our historical sources, best evidence is that Joseph doesn't really get news,

0:49.8

solid news on what's going on in Independence until the 9th of August when Oliver Cowdery

0:55.7

arrives from the south. So 23rd of July is when the persecution kind of hits. Joseph doesn't get word

1:03.3

until like the 9th. And so the 6th of August is the revelation of Section 98. And I love the

1:10.2

section heading where it says, although

1:11.6

some news of the problems in Missouri had no doubt reached the profit in Kirtland, 900 miles away,

1:17.0

there's no way he could have known the extent of the seriousness. And so that's important to see that.

1:21.9

Which is astounding considering what's in 98, because Joseph Smith produces a text about responding to adversity without

1:30.0

even knowing the depth of that adversity. That's kind of cool. So this clearly is coming from a divine

1:35.3

source and not from Joseph Smith's head. Now, we live in a world where we banter back and forth,

1:41.7

you know, within our own society. And there's a lot of hatred.

1:45.8

There's a lot of anger. That's what Section 98 is all about. When do we fight back? When do we

1:51.9

take up arms? When do we hire a lawyer? When do we become aggressive? When is conflict justified?
