And today we are covering Section 85, 86, and 87 of the Doctrine Covenants.

Section 85 is a portion of a letter that Joseph Smith is writing to W.W. Phelps, and it's dealing with the

issue of his complaint that not everybody's living consecration, not everybody's following the rules.

And so he writes a letter to Joseph asking his opinion of what should be done. And this is a portion of his response to W.W. Phelps.

So that's kind of the historical context.

This is all happening in 1832 in November.

So things were kind of a mess in Jackson County.

And this is Joseph writing to kind of clean up the mess. Now, not only does he have something

to say about the leadership, but also about the people. And if you look in the middle of

verse 7, there's going to be a mighty and strong one who is going to put arranged by lot the

inheritances. So my reading of this is, hey, it could be you, Edward Partridge,

since you were called, or it could be somebody who replaces you. Verse 8 says, that man who was

called of God and appointed that puteth forth his hand to steady the ark of God shall fall by

the shaft of death. Edward Partridge was kind of pushing back against some of the direction from Ohio. And so to me,

this is just my reading, but I look at it as it could be Edward Partridge, it could be his replacement.
