Summary

The latest of our RE-HEATED series, where we re-issue episodes that might share something with racing stories in the news… Episode 106 featuring Rick Mearsi. With the month of May upon us, we figured it was a good episode to re-visit. It’s Rick Mears, do you really need a description? He grew up in Bakersfield as an amateur off-road racer… then somehow he became a driver for Roger Penske’s IndyCar program…. then somehow won the race 4 times. How did that happen? Well we have the story in two parts. Dinner courtesy of Palomino in Indianapolis, IN.. Thanks to Continental Tire for all of their support!

Ryan, what do you got?

0:03.0

You know, the thing about Rick Mears is that he, uh, he always wears flip-flops.

0:08.5

And, uh, why does he always wear flip-flops, Sean?

0:11.3

His feet have been so banged up to the years that they're just more comfortable.

0:15.8

Right.

0:16.3

It's like literally out of necessity because he, you risked his life and limb literally with his

0:22.1

indy car career and has the injuries to uh to show for it so yeah he showed up wearing flip

0:27.9

pops but still dressed to the nines like penske perfect and i just thought that was so funny it's like

0:31.8

oh that's real yeah that's a thing but but the other thing is is that he waited for us to pack up

0:37.1

when we got done eating

0:38.0

and uh he sat with us and then he offered to take the pelkin case to our hotel with us he's like

0:44.7

oh i'm walking that way i'll i'll take and we're like no it's okay he's like no i got it and it's like

0:49.1

mario and dredi and rick mears both were like i'm helping you with your case man yeah yeah Yeah. Yeah. And it's like, Jesus, like, why? Yeah. It's just unreal. Just so, so cool. Some of those

0:59.4

memories that we have and listening to these reheated brings back a lot of them. And yeah, because obviously when we made this in 2018, you know, we were still really like eye open with some of these guests. And it's not that we're not now, but I think we're just so much more comfortable with knowing how the interview most likely will go and like we're not as worried about people staring at us in a restaurant. It's all of it's just so much more normal. But I remember sitting there in 2018 and we did this one just being like, oh my God. Like people are walking into the restaurant seeing him and they're like starstruck

1:28.7

because it's indie during the month of May and we're and we've got his attention yeah absolutely

1:34.4

yeah those are those are the things i'm going to remember forever so this yeah a lot of fun on this

1:39.3

episode and the one of these weird highlights that has happened a few times with us is when we hear from

1:44.6

the PR person, in this case, Jeremy Triano, who like reached out to us a day or two later saying,

1:50.0

man, he came in the next morning. He loved it. And it was like, God damn, that's cool.

1:55.0

Yeah, it's a home run for us. So, but yeah, I'll never forget him offering to take the Pelican case.

1:59.9

Like, really? And a thing that I thought was interesting listening back to this is that this is before Helio wins his fourth, you know, to tie Rick Mears. And, you know, it's just a different time now. We think back to it as like, oh, now it's like, you know, every year, this time of year, they talk about the guys that have won four of them. And at the time of this, it was just him and Foyt and Unser. And answer, exactly. You know, and so it's just neat that, like, the history has changed since this episode, and it relates to him directly. So just this time of year, I know you and I both get really excited about the 500, and we turn into little kids and sitting here a couple days before the race.
