Summary

Today’s question from a mom is near and dear to Annie Grace’s heart. Even if we raise our kids differently than our parents raised us, teaching them lessons about alcohol we wish our parents had taught us, how do we navigate the inevitable years where they will rebel and experiment with alcohol and make mistakes. As a mom of three herself, Annie often thinks about what her kids’ experiences with alcohol will be like. Listen as she shares her thoughts.

judgment, pain or rules, we explore the role of alcohol in our lives and culture.

Hi, it's Annie Grace. This is a question that I got asked of our email that is so dear to my

0:33.7

heart because I have three kids of my own. And so the question is how do we raise our children

0:38.3

in an alcohol-soaked society? So this is the email I got. Hi Annie, how do we raise our kids in

0:43.1

the society that glamorizes alcohol where it seems as a right of passage? When I was younger,

0:47.7

my parents allowed me to try a bit of wine with dinner, etc. And when I was a teenager,

0:51.5

they would allow me and my friends to have a bottle of wine in the bedroom. Alcohol was not a

0:56.8

fair bit in fruit at all. I really think that this mentality was the reason I didn't go wild when

1:01.0

I went to college or university. I was one of the only people who didn't get black out drunk until

1:05.0

I end up 38. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've vomited because of alcohol. On the

1:09.7

face of it, I had a very healthy relationship with alcohol. But in reality, I think that I just slowly

1:15.6

grew on my tolerance level because I was an early starter. And seeing everybody out of control

1:20.6

helped me to know my limits and stick to them. However, 20 years later, this increased tolerance

1:25.0

is not a good thing when my kids are starting to always associate wine as mommy's drink. And I know

1:30.6

I needed to do, I knew I needed to do something. This naked mind has completely transformed my

1:34.3

relationship with alcohol, but I'm left wondering how I can navigate the tricky balance of making

1:38.3

alcohol seem like the perfect way to rebel and indulge when they're old enough versus educating

1:42.6

them about the dangers of it. The whole world is telling them it's sexy and everybody's doing that.

1:48.0

And the boring lone voice is saying, well, actually, my voice is probably not going to be the one

1:52.5

that's listened to. Is it just inevitable? And if so, how can, as a mother, you possibly watch

1:57.2

your kiddos fly closer to that picture plant without swooping in in front of them? So, oh, this is
