Summary

In this month’s coaching episode, This Naked Mind head coach Scott Pinyard answers the following questions: 1) I am on day 20 without alcohol and I am so angry and grouchy. I am a nice person but don’t feel nice anymore. Is this normal? 2) I’m in the PATH and have been told we’re not going to be asked to quit drinking in the first eight weeks. Now I am drinking more on a daily basis. Is that bad? 3) During the first year of sober experiences, what are the best tools for those classic drinking events like weddings, vacations, and concerts where everyone else is drinking? 4) I feel like I have a split personality - I am excited about being alcohol free but I also have major FOMO when I think about not drinking in certain situations. Will this go away?

judgment, pain or rules, we explore the role of alcohol in our lives and culture.

0:28.7

Hello everybody, it's Scott Pinyard, head coach of this naked mind and I am back with another

0:34.8

edition of coaching questions. I have four of them for you this month so I'm going to dive

0:40.8

right in. Question number one, I am now on day 20, yes day 20, that's awesome. And I've

0:47.7

been feeling so angry and generally grouchy. My sweet husband is fantastic. I am thought of

0:54.0

as a nice person, however, I do not feel nice at all anymore. I'm much less able to tolerate

1:00.4

things I didn't like before and before but just took it or handled it anyway. Is this normal?

1:06.8

Well, this past why has it taken so long for the anger to surface? I do think this also happened

1:13.3

before when I quit for an 88 days. I'm so mad I didn't make it to 100. All right, so first,

1:21.3

I want everybody on the listening to this to join me in a deep breath.

1:32.6

So why did I do that? One of the main reasons that I did that is that one thing that is incredibly

1:38.5

common in this process is that emotions can feel a little bit raw especially at first and especially

1:46.1

as we adjust to living alcohol free. See, a lot of us used alcohol as a way to deal with difficult

1:54.3

emotions. I can talk about from my personal experience, it was stress and anxiety and I think

2:03.1

a little bit of depression and those three things I used to drink to make go away. Now, this wasn't

2:10.8

always necessarily a conscious thought but over time what happened for me and I've heard this from

2:17.0

hundreds of other people as well is I lost my ability to handle those emotions without alcohol.

2:24.0

You know, you can think of emotional resilience kind of like a muscle, right? And if you work out

2:29.4

of muscle and you get a huge biceps day and then you stop working out, what happens? The muscle

2:35.1

atrophies. The same thing can happen with our emotional resilience and so yes, it is completely normal

2:42.4

to feel kind of angry, grouchy, right? It's also normal sometimes to feel sad.
