Summary

After hitting a local piece of public land in search of squirrels (Much to no avail) Mark, Jimmy and Pat Durkin, a man of many talents, loads of hunting knowledge and a slew of cool life experiences sit down for a good, classic huntin' talk. From the rise of big game hunting and the related fall in small game hunting licenses sold to first time hunters, cross-cultural differences in food norms and changes in common hunting practices from the 70's to current times, if you make hunting a part of your lifestyle, chances are there's a lot in this podcast you're going to relate to. Pat is an outdoor columnist, former magazine editor for several publications and currently does some writing for the MeatEater crew as well, so if you like what you hear, give him a quick Google search and you're sure to find plenty more interesting and thought-provoking pieces to distract yourself from work with. As always - let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

We're just talking about you know admitting when you don't know something I consider

1:10.0

myself far from a squirrel hunter. I thought I'll be honest when we kind of went into it this

1:15.4

morning I was I had expectations that it would be the well not that you can always

1:21.0

catch blue gills all the time either but it was it'd be kind of like the blue gills of hunting

1:25.5

We'd go traits around the woods a little bit. I mean not you know be quiet, but I thought there'd be a little more action

1:31.5

All I could think about was that Dove Hunt from like a year ago where it was like, oh dude, this

1:36.1

spot is a shoe and we're going to just be hammering doves.

1:39.6

Did not see one dove. Then actually, no, we did see one dove at the end and we had to climb up an entire quarry side for it.

1:49.0

Then I thought about a hog hunt I went on, or we went up in a helicopter and they were like for sure when you're in a

1:54.4

chopper you just slam shot one and then today Mark was really talking up this squirrel spot and we saw one but it looks so good. We came close.

2:06.2

2:12.4

2:12.8

It's historically, yeah.

2:14.2

Yeah, yeah, so I mean, like we're talking a little bit ago just kind of like growing up

2:18.8

and small game hunting and just how that was kind of how most people started hunting and kind of more common.

2:26.5

Definitely. Yeah, the, well the area we're hunting today for squirrels is really close to where I grew up deer hunting.
