With folks in politics, it's hard to imagine Senator John McCain without Mark Salter,

who became his chief of staff, his collaborator, and co-author on seven books, including

his last book, called The Restless Wave, written in the last months of his life.

I sat down with Mark in Washington last week to talk about the man he served so faithfully

for so long, his friend, Senator McCain, and the politics of our time, as he also is

one of the fiercest critics within the Republican Party of our sitting president, Donald Trump.

Mark Salter, it's good to see you.

I haven't seen you personally since Senator McCain passed, so we're going to talk a lot

about him, but I just wanted to write at the outset say, I'm sorry for your loss because

I know how close you were and how much you meant to each other.

I am about two hours west Chicago.

Tell me about that and grown up.

You know, when I was growing up, very prosperous, people want to tell people I'm from Iowa,

I'm from the Iowa side of the Quad Cities, the west side of the Mississippi.

People think I grew up on a farm or in a small town or something, but it was a manufacturing

town.

There were a lot of farm implement foundries along the river.
