1:00.0

hey I'm pretty happy I before showing up to special warfare in 2020 I was the assistant director for strength conditioning Rutgers we were in that transition of going from into the big 10 man there was a lot changes I was occurring so I'm happy for him looks like football programs doing well basketball programs doing well so yeah good for them right where you get some of that big 10 money don't worry you just clip into Michigan in Ohio State I'm in Ohio State guys so we'll carry you through

1:30.0

big baby there you go so you got more fans showing up so JD welcome thanks for coming on and you know thanks for for showing up for the first time here just kind of tell everybody same thing kind of where you came from and what's your background

1:41.4

yeah so I spent 10 years in the Air Force before I started working in state conditioning I was a security forces I deployed a bunch of times work the nuclear base work the training base so I got all the experience on that side but I completed my bachelor's degree while I was in I used to wish an assistance

1:59.9

which was great I got a free bachelor's degree transitioned in 2014 started grad grad school at Texas Christian University TCU go for us so I worked with the Kinesiology Department as a research and teaching assistant

2:16.2

Australian conditioning intern with football baseball primarily but I helped a lot of teams being an intern took out a bunch of trash and all that stuff too so that was great

2:24.9

after that I transitioned to the NSCA the National Training Edition Association as a professional intern while I was there I also volunteered with the Air Force Academy and Olympic Training Center so I got a ton of experience in that seven months in that process I got picked up to work with the Army to stand at the Holistic Health and Fitness Program or H2F so I was one of the four initial training conditioning coaches that worked with the command to try to get that program rolling after four years of that was that Fort Drum and Fort Bliss

2:53.9

anybody's been to Fort Drum and Fort Bliss very unique challenges at each location I wasn't used to all that snow but drum but and then I got the opportunity to come here special warfare in 2020 so I've been here our excuse me 2021 so I've been here for two and a half years now

3:09.9

I'm actually working the research flat that I work with the coaches like Zach the Dietitians everyone on the human performance side to integrate more seamlessly with the active duty cadre that can meet our demands

3:22.9

and produces many three levels we can out the door so awesome so the thing I like about this training plan and we've been talking about it now for months you know when we had the whole team on basically what you guys did is you looked and you found a problem and that problem was way back even before people get into basic training like you looked and you were like how can we set the groundwork how can we lay the skills that we need for people to be successful so it's not just preparing for the IFT it's not just showing up to your development sessions

3:51.9

you came up with an entire program that gets before you know gets ahead of the issues before basic training so just to kind of flesh those issues that we get questions on them all the time what are some some common issues that you're seeing when you intake students out of BMT and into swix so

4:08.9

stuff that we've talked about before is you know sometimes it's grip strength or upper body strength in order to do pull up sometimes it's time on feet with lower leg stuff Zach I'll open the floor to you what are some of those common problems that you're seeing with candidates that are that are coming into the SWIC program out of basic training

4:24.9

I would say collectively it's just more time like that was the whole reason for this pre-assession is they just need more time to develop that's one thing we noticed over the few years we've been doing this it was more so that if candidates got more time to train they did better right and it's pretty easy to see.

4:43.9

So that was that was the whole intent of the pre-assession was you know what let's give these these candidates and trainees a good chance and let's let's work our way back we know what the limitations are at BMT we know where they need to be for SWIC to get ready for A&S let's kind of reverse engineer and work backwards and create a product that you know that will build them up at a adequate rate that will help

5:11.9

help prepare that for that for that SWIC gap and that's kind of what we worked on obviously the number one goal is to pass the IFT and that's what the original

5:21.9

if we were to list this program out in tiers tier one is to pass the IFT you know pass the IFT you're not even getting in this way so our first goal is to accomplish that and then tier two is to handle some of the high injury or high wrist stuff which I can pass on the JD here.

5:37.9

Yeah so we have a bone stress injury. I wouldn't say it's an issue but it's a high incidence of bone stress injury and a lower leg and a lower leg and especially early on in their training process and that goes back to exactly what we talked about in like the pre-enlistment training.

5:55.9

Are they doing the things that are necessary before they show up? So actually I do where we're x-raying everyone now as they come into SWIC to see you know their bone quality,

6:05.9

get a better view of their body fat percentage and all those important factors to make sure that we aren't assuming too much risk for someone who didn't show up prepared.

6:17.9

So in order to make sure they were prepared we put this program together if anybody's looked at it there's not just any conditions there's

6:24.9

dietician information and their sleep information and their stress management just in a simple explanation of the training process.
