Drew Shadine had a big smile and bright blue eyes. In high school she was voted

Homecoming Queen and in college she joined a sorority. She had a bubbly

personality, upbeat and confident, happy and fun. She was athletic, playing

volleyball, basketball, and golf. She was-working and full of grit. While studying

graphic design at the University of North Dakota, the 22-year-old worked not one

but two jobs. You could find her at Victoria's secret at the

Columbia Mall in Grand Forks. And then at nights she would work as a waitress at

the College Hangout El Rocco. She was always on time, punctual.

Drew was also incredibly kind. She had been that way growing up. A federal judge would later write,

on the first day of ninth grade when the teacher directed that the students choose a partner,

Drew immediately selected the girl who had recently transferred to the school and knew no one.

Drew took the new girl under her wing. They became lifelong friends.

At a street dance Drew accepted the hand of a male in a wheelchair and then

danced with him. Drew Katrina Shadine made people feel comfortable. She

brought people together and joined them in laughing. people

Today's episode begins with Drew finishing her shift at Victoria's

secret before the start of a busy holiday shopping season in 2003.

It was November 22nd, a cold snowy day.

It was late afternoon, sun began to set, and dark was coming soon. Drew had a break between her

two jobs so she did a little shopping of her own at the mall. On video

surveillance she was seen at 4.55 p.m. leaving the Marshall Field store with a newly bought purse.
