Mother, Mother, how's the family?

Hey, everybody.

Today's guest is multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tracy Bonham.

Together, we take a deep dive into the writing, recording, and inspiration behind her

breakout hit single, Mother, Mother, taken from her 1996 debut album, The Burdens of Being Upright.

Wow, what a cool song. Tracy informed me that she not only sang and played violin on the track,

but she recorded all the guitars, both electric and acoustic. The song screams the 1990s,

from its recorded execution to Tracy's vocal angst, the odd arrangement, and the fact that there's a violin in a hit rock song.

Tracy mentioned that she initially thought Mother Mother was funny, a tongue-in-cheek yet insanely biographical take on Tracy's relationship with her mom at the time, a relationship that

truly blossomed when Tracy's mom played herself in the video for Mother Mother. So cool.

Producer Sean Slade and Paul Kew Coulterie knocked this one out of the park. When I asked Tracy

if she still thinks the song sounds slamming almost 30 years later,

she enthusiastically said yes, because it does.
