Now, here's your host, Ryan Calcalahan. Residents living near Edwards Air Force Base in 1962 had the privilege of witnessing something

no one had ever seen before nor will likely ever see again.

A black bear traveling at supersonic speeds and falling from the sky on a

parachute. The Air Force was testing a jet ejection safety system invented by a

fellow named Bob Stanley and this system has been credited with saving hundreds of lives.

We've all seen videos of ejection seats in the movies, but it's easy to imagine how a system like this could do more harm than good.
