This week, I want to talk to you about thinking about pain in a different way to make it much more manageable. 0:52.0 | and a big part of that is learning how to accept versus resisting pain. |
1:00.0 | And I think that one of the most important skill sets that we can develop is the capacity to feel. |
1:10.0 | And I think pain presents an opportunity for us to deepen our ability to feel. |
1:19.0 | And I will say that the most painful things that I've gone through in my life have been the things that I have resisted, feeling the pain, and created a lot of unnecessary suffering now. |
1:34.0 | I think about breakups that I went through when I was younger in my relationships or disappointments that I suffered. |
1:42.0 | When I look back now on the actual circumstances of what happened versus what I was actually believing in thinking, |
1:49.0 | it's astounding to me how much pain I generated on top of something that would have been painful. |
1:55.0 | Had I not created so much a drama around it, but I intensified it so much because I was unwilling to just accept the pain of loss in that situation. |
2:06.0 | So I think it's really important to understand pain and recognize how our brain interprets pain. |
2:18.0 | And it's not something that we spend a lot of time thinking about. |
2:22.0 | We don't think about what pain is and we very rarely distinguish between the two types of pain that we experience. |
2:33.0 | So in many situations, we have the sensation of physical pain. |
2:40.0 | And I actually work with lots of clients who have physical bodily aches and pains that they are dealing with on a daily basis in their life. |
2:52.0 | And I find it really important to distinguish that pain from the emotional pain. |
