While there's broad agreement that the United States has an incredibly polarized political

moment, there's a broad disagreement on where that polarization came from.

And since 2020's an election year, we've been gifted with three different books from

really great authors and thinkers on this topic.

You've got Michael Lind, who we had on the first episode of this season, arguing that the

reason why our country so polarized is that the class-based settlements that protected

our politics after World War II broke down in the 1970s.

And our task today is to make new settlements that would split power between the working

class and the elite of our country.

You then have why we're polarized by Voxes as we're clined, where he argues that our

tribalism is rooted in the deep psychological divisions that we have as people, and that

the way our society's been structured, everything from media to the way our political system

is set up, incentivizes that same polarization.

Finally, you have our guests today.

Christopher Caldwell.

He's got an incredibly controversial argument that the roots of our divisions lie in the

failed legacy of the 1960s, specifically citing the unintended and yet predicted consequences

of a 1964 Civil Rights Act.
