Summary
When Christine Banfield was brutally attacked inside her own home, her husband Brendan claimed he had interrupted a violent intruder and acted in self-defense. But as investigators dug deeper, cracks quickly began to form in that story. What initially appeared to be a tragic home invasion soon unraveled into something far more calculated involving a hidden affair, digital evidence, and a chilling sequence of events that pointed not outward, but inward.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the murder of Christine Banfield and the death of Joseph Ryan, examining how a seemingly ordinary family life masked a web of deception, manipulation, and motive and how investigators ultimately pieced together what really happened inside that Fairfax County home.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome back to Mama Mystery. I am your host, Kelly. And thank you for being so patient with me today. I know I typically try to publish my episodes on Tuesdays, but because of this case, and you'll understand once we get into it, it was kind of rapidly evolving literally this week. So I wanted to make sure I had all the information so that you wouldn't have to come back later for an update. |
| 0:26.4 | So today we are talking about the case of Brendan and Christine Banfield. |
| 0:29.4 | The trial in this case just wrapped up earlier this week. |
| 0:32.8 | So I have everything you need to know about this story. |
| 0:38.2 | I'm also actively following the case of Nancy Guthrie, which is Savannah Guthrie's mom. |
| 0:41.0 | Savannah Guthrie is a host for the Today Show. |
| 0:43.7 | And her mom, Nancy, went missing over the weekend. |
| 0:45.2 | And this story is kind of crazy. And I'm going to be touching on it in our weekly docket on Friday. |
| 0:48.8 | But essentially what happened was over the weekend, Nancy was hanging out with some of her family, one of her daughters, |
| 0:55.9 | Annie, who is Savannah's sister. They were together playing mahjong, you know, spent the day |
| 1:02.2 | together Saturday. They dropped Nancy off at her home. She lives by herself in the Catalina |
| 1:07.7 | foothills of Tucson, Arizona. They dropped her off by herself around 9.30 p.m. |
| 1:12.7 | And then the next day, when Nancy didn't show up for church, her church friends recognized that |
| 1:18.3 | that was very out of character for her. She always showed up at church. So they alerted some of |
| 1:24.0 | Nancy's family to go and check on her. And when the family went to her home, they |
| 1:28.5 | discovered that Nancy was not there and that there was signs that something may have happened. |
| 1:33.1 | So they called 911. You know, 911 comes out. The authorities, police come out. And they |
| 1:38.9 | quickly realized that whatever happened in that house was not, you know, of Nancy leaving of her own |
| 1:46.8 | free will. She was taken from the home and the evidence in the home suggested that. |
| 1:52.7 | So as far as exactly what was inside the home that tipped them off, I don't know. That has not |
| 1:59.2 | been confirmed publicly. But Brian Enten with |
| 2:02.0 | News Nation, he was out on scene and he actually walked up to the house. I believe it was him. |
