Welcome to the Life Coach School Podcast, where it's all about real clients, real problems,

0:13.6

and real coaching. And now your host, Master Coach Instructor Brook Castillo.

0:21.4

Well hello my friends. Today I have recorded a podcast for you on urges.

0:29.5

And the reason I'm recording this podcast is because so many of my students give into confusion

0:36.0

when it comes to urges and managing urges. And so I want this to be a resource for you to be able

0:43.7

to come back to to understand what's going on when you experience an urge. Here's the thing I want

0:51.1

to tell you. Everything that you do as it applies to buffering, which for some of you is overeating,

0:58.0

over drinking, OCD behaviors, looking at your phone too much, checking your email too much,

1:05.5

any obsessive cleaning, anything like that that you're struggling with. I want you to know

1:12.4

1:22.6

This is not difficult. What's difficult is the feeling that you will have and be left with

1:31.2

if you don't follow through on an urge. So I want you to think about the model. A thought is going

1:38.0

to cause the urge. So you may have a thought I need to clean that. I need to eat that. I want to drink.

1:46.4

I want to taste that. I want to smoke that. I want to see who called me. I want to see if anyone

1:51.9

liked my photo. All of those thoughts cause that urge to pick up the phone, pick up the food. Do

1:58.1

whatever it is that you are complying with that urge. Again, not doing the thing is easy. So not

2:09.2

picking up the phone, not picking up the cookie. That's all easy, you guys. That is not the hard part.

2:14.6

Right? It's not hard to put the fork down. It's not hard to not pick up the food. What's difficult

2:21.6

is dealing with the emotion, dealing with the urge when you don't comply. And here's what I want

2:30.1

to say about that is that urges demand action. They demand it. But an urge has no authority.

2:42.5

So it's kind of like if I say to you, pick that up, pick that up, pick that up, pick it up right now.
