we are the core. We are the core. Hey! dramatic reading of some letters written in the late 1940s between Lowry Nelson, a professor

at the University of Minnesota, and the first presidency.

The gist of the letters was basically this.

Nelson, who was an active member, was asked by a mission president out of Georgia for his opinion about doing missionary work in Cuba since Nelson had extensive experience in the region,

and the church was trying to figure out how exactly they could get in and convert all the whiteies while ignoring the blacks because black people

were quote not entitled to all the blessings of the gospel.

Yay, Mormonism!

Anyway, after receiving this letter, Nelson was understandably appalled

and wrote the first presidency to basically ask,

are you really sure that God's down with racism and

wonder of wonders they actually responded and it turned into something of a

showdown between big old Lowry balls Nelson and the first presidency about the church's stance on the Negro as they called it.

The exchange is absolutely fascinating and believe me this watered down summary just does not do it justice.
