I first met Michael Bennett when he was a star school superintendent in Denver, having

taken that school system forward in many, many ways.

And I candidate for Secretary of Education in 2008.

He didn't get that job, but ended up in the United States Senate instead.

Where is one of the most thoughtful members a real voice for reason, for compromise, for

valuing our institutions and handing them to future generations?

He came by the Institute of Politics the other day, and we sat down to talk about where

we are as a country in the era of Trump.

Michael Bennett, it's always good to be with you.

You're one of the great joys of doing these conversations is you learned stuff about people

you thought you knew, and never really did.

And part of what I learned about you was just how exotic your family mixes and your

early experiences.

But you, on the one hand, you're a descendant way back to the Mayflower.

And on the other hand, you're the descendant of folks who escaped the Warsaw ghetto.

Tell me about your family.

My brother James, who's a journalist from members, that when I was in the second grade, we

were asked to line up in order of how long our family had been in the United States, and

that I was the answer to both questions.

Because my mom and her parents had left.
