Summary

This week Tylor, Evy and Robbie take on the heavily debated subject of whether or not zoos are vegan-friendly. As animal-lovers, many vegans crave the opportunity to meet animals in person and zoos might seem like the obvious option, however there is no denying that wild animals in captivity are caged against their will. We talk about our experiences with zoos and the role zoos play in education and conservationism. Later on, we interview Maddie Taylor, the Campaigns Officer for the animal rights organisation, Freedom For Animal (previously known as the Captive Animals Protection Society). Also on this episode…

  • Are not-for-profit zoos more ethical?
  • Tylor: “We don’t want bigger cages; we want empty cages.”
  • Listener question: What about zoos that help conserve certain species?
  • Is Newt Scamander’s suitcase a zoo or a sanctuary?
  • Breaking news from the vegan wizarding world brought to you by The ChickPeeps’ most persistent tweeter.
  • What is life like for animals in zoos?
  • Maddy: “I think part of the problem is that a zoo is very much about creating a great day out for the visitor… giving you the perception that those animals are free.”
  • What is Stereotypic behaviour and what are some examples of it?
  • Marius the giraffe and “Surplus” animals - how was Copenhagen Zoo allowed to kill a perfectly healthy animal and is this a common practice?
  • Where do zoos get their animals?
  • What about zoos’ role in conservation projects?
  • Alternative ways to learn about animals
  • Do certain zoos improve the lives of animals in captivity?
  • What we can do to help animals in captivity now?
  • Robbie takes issue with Evy’s vegan highlight of the week

0:40.8

So I'm really looking forward to this episode because we've actually had a couple of listener comments about zoos, particularly from someone who worked in a zoo, I think.

0:48.3

And so we're going to talk about our own perceptions of zoos and how we feel about them as vegans.

0:55.1

want to start us off how do you feel about zoos and um when was the last time you went to one

1:08.8

yeah i mean the last time that i went to the zoo i think was when I was in high school. I think it was like my freshman year. And that's actually the only time that I've ever been to one also. I'm not a fan of zoos. Wow, one and done. Yeah, one and done. You know, went there. I want to say that it wasn't for animal rights reasons that I didn't go. It was just, you know, it's so far away. But, yeah, I'm obviously not in favor of zoos. But I'm mostly interested in this interview that you guys do with Freedom for Animals because it's one of the tricky topics. You know, so many people are vegan, but yet they still go to the zoo

1:44.8

or they still support zoos. So I'm really excited for everybody to hear why they should not support

1:51.2

them. Just off of what Tyler just said about how vegans go to zoos, well, some vegans will go to zoos.

1:56.3

I think, like, a big part of veganism is connecting with animals and so many people for them

2:01.4

they think they'll go to zoos to connect with those animals and a lot of the time like you

2:07.5

you see animals that you think are happy because they'll just be out in the sun or it'll be

2:17.1

when we don't see the obvious suffering you know whereas like it's a hard thing to understand why we shouldn't go to zoos when we don't see
