Summary

Anxiety is something that many of us struggle with and when it comes to socializing without our crutch of alcohol, the temptation to drink can become overwhelming. How can we overcome this? Should we just stop socialize altogether? Annie delivers her advice, based on a combination of science and experience, to help us remain true to ourselves in those now-sober (and therefore unfamiliar) social situations.

Hi friends, it's Annie Grace with this naked mind and I am answering readers questions.

0:32.4

Today's question comes from Charlotte. She says, could you talk about how to cope in social

0:39.6

situations without drinking? I've been out to pub so many times with the intention of

0:43.7

not drinking, but because of my need to feel less anxious socially, I've let myself have

0:49.0

a drink with the intention of being sensible, but end up waking up the next morning, not

0:52.7

remembering the night and usually end up injured. I guess I need to stay out of the pub's

0:57.4

full stop, but anything on how to deal with social anxiety as a non-drinker would be fabulous.

of stopping drinking and you've actually identified that you've changed your brain to where you're

1:15.6

having cravings that are almost unstoppable and it's very difficult for you to overcome them,

1:22.9

then staying away for a minute until you get kind of a grip on that is probably a good idea.

1:29.0

I will say that that's not the typical case for most people. I mean, often when that happens,

1:35.1

that means that something's actually physically changed in your brain and there's a whole slew of

1:39.6

reasons behind that. It has to do with different levels of stress and I actually did another

1:45.0

video post on that, but if that's happening, what's happening in your brain and they've done

1:49.2

MRI studies to show this is you have two parts of your brain. You've got your midbrain,

1:53.7

which is like your amygdala, and this part of your brain is really responsible for kind of

1:58.0

survival. So if you were to get in a car crash, that's the part of your brain that leaps into action.

2:03.5

You don't think about it. You just act, right? And it is important for your survival, and when

2:08.6

your survival is on the line, it takes over completely. And then you've got the human part of your
