Any Richmond area resident who watched the news from 1979 through 1985 likely heard

descriptions of the disturbing crimes they committed.

More than four decades after their killing rampage, the Briley Brothers almost seemed mythical,

but they were real people who randomly took innocent lives without any provocation.

They murdered whenever they felt the urge.

Linwood, James and Anthony Briley made up the River City's most infamous killing gang

of the 20th century.

Police linked 11 solved murders to the Briley's during a seven-month stretch in 1979,

but they were suspected of killing more as many as 20.

The oldest, Linwood, was charismatic and calculating.

The second oldest, James, was intimidating and impulsive.

The brothers convinced their youngest brother, Anthony, and a teenage neighbor, Duncan Meekens,

to join them on a rampage that left a permanent mark on one of the South's most famously historic

cities.

The slings weren't contained to one neighborhood, or even one jurisdiction.

The Briley gang left bodies in various parts of the Richmond metropolitan area.

They didn't discriminate.

They killed men, women, and children.

Their victims were black and white.
