episode, I'm going to talk about the Summer House reunion part one, but also the Duggers.

Now, again, the first part of the reunion aired last night. And I have to tell you, I think this may be

one of those episodes that you're going to want to share with your friends, because I think I may have cracked the case. Think of this as my

presentation at the end of the college course on Summer House. The question has been, why are we

so invested in the story? And as you know, people have been posting that they have never even

watched this show,

but they're going to watch the reunion. That is real commitment. Reality TV, as I have often said,

at its best, is supposed to be an escape. You pour the drink and you put your feet up and you let other

people's chaos wash all over you. And for maybe those 43 minutes, you are not thinking about

your inbox or your shitty boss or your mother or the kids that have to be picked up. That's the

contract. But somewhere along the way, and Summer House has been on the air for 10 seasons,

a decade, which is longer than some of these people's

marriages. Somewhere along the way, the contract changes, because you stop watching them,

and you start knowing them. That's the parisocial part. We've been trained to call it a relationship,

and that's fine. But I think what's actually happening is more interesting

than that because what's actually happening is that we're using them as a mirror. Their dynamics

activate our dynamics. So the way you read Amanda is a Rorschach test for every single Amanda

you have ever known. Because here's the thing about Kyle and Amanda.

We watch them date.

We watch them get engaged.

We watch their wedding.
