There's very little that's moderate about our politics today, and one of the most uncomfortable

places to be is a moderate in politics.

Bob Dold represented the most democratic district in the country, held by a Republican, he

being a Republican, and very nearly won a district that Hillary Clinton was winning by 32

points in the northern suburbs of Chicago.

He came away after serving two terms in Congress with a real bird's eye understanding of the

challenges that we face, and I got a chance to sit down with him the other day at the

Institute of Politics where he's been a fellow this spring.

Let me thank you first for the spending.

Your spring here at the Institute of Politics, a big impression on our young people here.

Well, it's been an absolute honor to be here, and I thank you, David, for giving me the

opportunity to come and have a conversation with some of these young people.

They are truly a gifted bunch.

You, I want to get into, and I will, what life is like as a moderate Republican in Washington

in the modern era.

But before I do, I want to talk a little bit about your own journey.
