On March 15, 2007, 43-year-old Air Force Major, Carl Herrig, hadn't shown up for a scheduled flight assignment.

Officer Ronald Lane, with the Newton Falls Police Department, responded to a welfare check at Carl's home in Newton Falls, Ohio.

He pulled into the driveway and parked next to a Subaru pickup truck.

There was no one else inside the residence, so officers secured the scene and started collecting evidence.
